And So It Begins

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”

– J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

My name is Kelly, and I’m a college student with a passion for Jesus. I have several other passions, as well, such as writing (fiction, mostly), blogging, and hanging out with my stellar family.

I should probably also mention that I’m super-geeky. I already have a blog about things which pertain to this subject (click here if you wanna check it out), but I’m not sure that I should keep working on it. See, I want God to get the glory from everything I do, and I’m pretty sure that blog glorifies myself. Consequently, God gave me an idea—an idea that could combine all of my passions for his glory.

Before I describe how I’ll do so, let me explain that seemingly random quote. Here it is again:

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”

Nerds like myself tend to get really wrapped up in nerdy things. That can be perfectly fine, but we need to remember that we’re primarily to “set [our] hearts…[and] minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:1-2, NIV). We can’t let geeky things become the focal point of our lives, or we’ll be wasting our time.

fandom vs real life

This is one of my biggest struggles. I have to remind myself that I can’t let geeky stuff be all that I think about. I have to focus on Christ, so my thoughts and actions will become more like his. I have to remember that I can not dwell on dreams alone, lest I forget to live for God.

So, how am I going to combine my passions for God’s glory? Here’s how: I’m going to write and post devotionals based on an abundance of geeky subjects. (WARNING: I’m a major Potterhead, so prepare to see a lot of posts based on that particular fandom). In doing so, my hope is that both you and I will grow more godly, and will focus on “things above” more often.

I started this post with an awesome, nerdy quote, but I’m going to close with something even better. Let me close with this prayer for you from Scripture.

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness…to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11, NIV).

May the odds be ever in your favor, may the force be with you, and may your love abound more and more for God’s glory.

P.S. In case you were wondering about my denomination, I am Baptist, and mainly use NIV.  No matter your denomination—or even your religion, or lack thereof—I hope you are blessed by what I write, and I am always open to hearing your opinion.
